NZX 50 slumps 35 points

The NZX 50 sharemarket index slumped 35 points (1%) on Thursday to close at 3409 on turnover of $90 million.

Significant falls included Fletcher Building, down 18 cents to $6.03, Telecom down 5.5 cents to $2.45, while its Chorus offshoot fell 2 cents to $3.01.

Australian-controlled Contact Energy dropped 9 cents to $4.78, Sky Network TV fell 4 cents to $4.92, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare dropped 5 cents to $1.92, Trade Me fell 2 cents to $3.74, and Xero dropped 1 cent to $4.80.

Retailer Kathmandu fell 3 cents to $1.45.

Stocks which were unchanged included Air New Zealand (86 cents), The Warehouse ($2.52), and Diligent Board Member Services ($3.53).

Sky City Entertainment rose 2 cents to $3.47, and Mainfreight lifted 1 cent to $9.51.

Renaissance rose 2.7 cents to 13 cents after announcing plans to sell its distribution arm, and Metlifecare rose 4 cents to $2.20 after the retirement village operator re-jigged for a third time its planned takeover of two rivals and had the deal approved by shareholders.

New Zealand's dollar finished the business day trading at 79.70 US cents, 78.48 Australian, 50.84 pence, 63.47 yen, 0.6289 euro and the TWI was at 71.92 points.
