The editor of The Press newspaper in Christchurch has been appointed as editor-in-chief of Fairfax's The Age newspaper in Melbourne.

Andrew Holden replaces Paul Ramadge, who stepped down on Monday along with the Sydney Morning Herald publisher Peter Fray and editor Amanda Wilson.

Mr Holden has previously worked for The Age.

Fairfax's fortunes have dwindled in recent times. Its share price has plummeted more than 85% in the past five years amid rising online competition.

It is also grappling with its largest shareholder, mining magnate Gina Rinehart, reportedly asking for three board seats and more editorial control.
