Fresh figures from electronic payment firm, Paymark, has shown retail spending rose 5% to $3.6 billion in June compared with the same month last year.

Paymark head of sales and marketing Paul Whiston says household spending has picked up in recent months.

Mr Whiston says winter has not deterred people from eating out, while the colder weather has prompted a splurge on winter clothing.

He says dining out grew 9.3% nation-wide and spending on clothing was up 13% across the country.
