Visitor numbers down slightly

The number of visitors staying in hotels, motels and backpackers is down slightly.

Official figures show nights spent in short-term commercial accommodation fell 0.3% to 1.9 million in May compared with a year ago. It was the fifth consecutive monthly fall.

The number of international visitors decreased by 2.7%, while domestic travellers rose 1.9%.

Otago and Waikato registered rises, but that was offset by falls in most other regions.

Guest nights fell for backpackers and holiday parks, but rose for hotels and motels.

Tourism accounts for around 10% of New Zealand's gross domestic product.
