Air New Zealand is set to make it more attractive to fly standby.
Last week the national carrier cut its domestic fares for the second time in nine months stimulate demand on the bigger jets it is flying on the country's main routes.
Australasia general manager Bruce Parton says up until last month the airline had been offering cheaper standby fares on its off-peak flights.
Mr Parton says the standby system it runs at present has been more popular that the airline anticipated.
"That's forced us to re-evaluate standby fares and see what it is we could do to look to improve and change it to meet the customer's needs."
Mr Parton says an announcement is due in the next week or so.
