Barfoot & Thompson says it has sold 424 homes in Auckland worth over $1 million in the first half of this year.

Barfoot & Thompson says the same number of houses were sold in the same time period in 2007, before the global financial crisis.

Chief executive Wendy Alexander says houses in the surrounding central city suburbs, coastal suburbs and rural lifestyle blocks are in great demand.

She says the 424 homes sold is a 38% jump on the same time in 2011.

Ms Alexander says the hike doesn't include houses worth more than $2 million, which haven't increased since 2007.

She says the most expensive suburbs to buy in are Herne Bay where the average price is $1.35 million and Devonport, which averages at about $1.1 million.

Ms Alexander says more high earning people in Auckland are investing in their lifestyle.

By contrast, only 51 $2 million houses sold in first six months of the year, half the 2007 number.
