Total guest nights at hotels, motels, backpackers and holiday parks climbed 4% in June, compared with May.
The rise was driven by a lift of almost 9% in the number of domestic guests. International guest numbers rose 4%.
Most of the rise occurred in the North Island, particularly Auckland, with hotels showing a strong increase.
South Island guest nights rose by almost 2%.
