The victory of Apple in a patent case over its Samsung is expected to affect the whole smartphone market.
A federal jury in California on Friday found Samsung stole designs from Apple to create its own smartphones and computer tablets and awarded more than $US1 billion damages.
The infringements included the Apple's icons and the pinch and zoom feature on its smartphones and tablet devices.
A Radio New Zealand correspondent says Apple's victory will increase costs for all other smartphone makers as well, such as HTC and LG.
