Coal mine operator to cut 600 jobs in Australia

Xstrata, which operates some of Australia's biggest coal mines, is cutting around 600 jobs across the country.

The company said on Monday that low coal prices, high input costs and a strong Australian dollar have left it no choice but to undertake a restructure of its operations.

Xstrata Coal's operations in New South Wales include the Mangoola, Ravensworth, Bulga and Mount Owen mines.

In a statement, Xstrata said corporate roles will also be cut at its Sydney office.

The ABC reports the cuts are not expected to have an impact on Australian coal production volumes.
