Newspapers doing OK

7:14 am on 11 September 2012

The Newspaper Publishers Association says newspapers are doing well in the face of competition from electronic media.

Norwegian company, Norske Skog, announced on Monday it is halving production at its Kawerau pulp and paper mill, citing falling demand for newsprint and an unfavourable exchange rate.

Association chief executive Tim Pankhurst says the plant has always produced more newsprint than the New Zealand market could absorb, with a significant amount being exported.

He says New Zealand newspaper readerships are pretty robust, with a small decline in circulation of between 1% - 2% each year because of competition from electronic media.
