Tourist accommodation numbers down 9% in July

The number of people staying in tourist accommodation fell almost 9% in July, compared with the previous month.

after rises in the previous two months, Statistics New Zealand says domestic guest nights fell significantly in July, with international guest nights also down.

Domestic guest nights fell 11%, while international guest nights fell 3.8%.

North Island guest nights fell 11%, while South Island guest nights fell 3.7%.

Guest nights fell for all types of accommodation, but hotels and motels were hardest hit.

The national trend for guest nights has been declining since December 2009.
