Stocks on Wall Street closed little changed on Thursday after a rally sparked by data on weekly jobless claims fizzled out.
The Dow Jones index was down 18.5 points at 13,326 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 2 points to 3049.
In Europe: the FTSE 100 in London rose 0.9%, the DAX in Frankfurt was up 1.1% and the CAC-40 in Paris rose 1.4%.
The Australian 200 Index fell 7 points, or 0.2 percent, to 44 84 and the NZX50 index fell 5 points, or 0.1%, to 3883
At 8.30am the New Zealand dollar was trading at 81.75 US cents, 79.76 Australian cents, 50.96 pence, 64.04 yen and 0.6324 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 72.95.
Brent crude oil was trading at $US116.95 per barrel and gold is trading at $US1769.30 per ounce.
