A Blenheim company wants to change the way the steel industry makes its products.
CarbonScape has formed six years ago. It has patented energy efficient technology which converts wood and waste products into valuable graphite, carbon and "green coke" to replace fossil fuels.
The firm was recently given more than $150,000 when it was named runner-up in an international "green" innovation challenge for its C02-reducing technology, and it plans to spend that on developing its plant.
Co-founder and director Nick Gerritsen says the renewable coke could replace coal in steel industry furnaces and reduce global gas emissions.
''We have identified three commercial products that we can make,'' he said.
