Auckland still top regional economy

Auckland retains top ranking in a league table of the strongest performing regional economies compiled by the ASB.

Auckland was on top for the second consecutive quarter by virtue of its strengthening housing market.

Tasman was ranked second, up from fourth in the June quarter.

An increase of 50% in residential construction from a year ago propelled Wellington into third spot in the bank's September quarter regional rankings.

Hawke's Bay slipped to bottom place as the high New Zealand dollar took its toll on the province's exporting and tourism industries.
