New RMA bill passes first reading

6:21 pm on 11 December 2012

Legislation that would introduce a six-month deadline for resource consent applications for medium-sized projects has passed its first reading in Parliament.

The six-month limit would apply to projects such as new subdivisions, retail and industrial developments, and infrastructure.

The Resource Management Reform Bill would also allow the Environment Minister to make regulations requiring local councils to monitor the environment according to specified priorities and methodologies.

Parliament's Local Government and Environment Committee will now consider the Bill.
