Skywest signs deal with Rio Tinto

2:09 pm on 24 December 2012

Regional airline Skywest is to fly mine workers to the Pilbara region of Western Australia under a new charter agreement with Rio Tinto.

Skywest is set to be bought by Virgin Australia. The company said on Monday it will provide flights to Boolgeeda for workers at Rio Tinto's Brockman 4 and surrounding mines.

AAP reports the first services will commence before the end of December.

The company expects to operate up to eight return services each week over the three years of the contract.

Virgin is waiting for regulatory approval for its $A98.7 million takeover of Skywest, which was announced in October.
