Quarterly profit fell at Bank of America after it had to take another financial hit on bad mortgage debt.
Net profit in the last three months of 2011 was $US732 million, down from $US2 billion a year earlier.
The BBC reports that one-off charges of more than $US5 billion dated back to the US housing market collapse of 2007-08.
The charges included a payment of $US2.7 billion to the Fannie Mae mortgage agency to settle claims relating to residential home loans.
Bank of America confirmed earlier this month it would pay Fannie Mae $US11.6 billion in total.
Revenues at the bank in the final quarter of 2012 fell 26% to $US19.6 billion.
