Slight increase in job ads

Newspaper and online job advertisements have recorded a slight increase, indicating there is still very little growth in the labour market.

ANZ Bank's monthly survey shows job ads rose a seasonally adjusted 1% in February, driven by an increase in internet listings in Canterbury and Auckland.

Newspapers job ads fell in six out of the seven regions tracked by ANZ, with Canterbury the exception.

The composite index, which gives more weighting to newspaper ads, is down 7.4% compared with a year ago.

ANZ senior economist Sharon Zollner says the series continues to suggest an unemployment rate hovering about the 7% mark and it is a very mixed picture across the regions.
