Many missing out on overtime pay - study

More than a quarter of Australia's workers who do overtime are not being paid for the extra hours, according to a study.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has published a study showing about one in three employees spend extra time at work, the ABC reports.

But of those, 26% or about 800,000 people, are not compensated for the overtime they do.

Of those who were compensated, more than half were paid, while most others received time in lieu.

Survey director Cassandra Gligora told the ABC women are more likely to go without pay for extra hours.

"More men usually work extra hours or overtime than women. However, more women are usually not compensated for this work, so one-in-three women aren't compensated for this work compared to one-in-five men," she said.

The bureau says that could be due to problems in industries with high female workforces, rather than gender discrimination.
