Qantas and Emirates trans-Tasman deal approved

The Government has approved a deal between Qantas and Emirates to share services on the trans-Tasman routes.

The partnership, approved for five years on condition that the current level of services are maintained, was given the nod in Australia several weeks ago.

The airlines say it will give New Zealand customers better links to Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Britain, as well as frequent flyer benefits.

Qantas says it will mean increased tourism opportunities for New Zealand, by making it easier for travellers across both airlines' networks to connect more easily across the Tasman.

Qantas and Emirates operate a total of 129 flights per week between Australia and New Zealand.
