SkyCity has purchased the Wharf Casino in Queenstown for $5 million.

The Wharf Casino is located in Queenstown's central business district and has a licence which allows for a maximum of 74 electronic gaming machines and 6 gaming tables.

The casino operator's purchase of the company that holds the licence for the Wharf Casino is subject to regulatory approval from the Commerce and Gambling Commissions.

The purchase is part of SkyCity's strategy of increasing its presence in Queenstown and comes after it assumed full ownership of SkyCity Queenstown Casino late last year.

SkyCity is also part of a consortium that is the preferred group to build the Queenstown Convention Centre.
