VeriFone buys EFTPOS

VeriFone Systems has bought EFTPOS New Zealand from the ANZ Bank but it won't say for how much.

VeriFone operates payment services in more than 110 countries, and the purchase will give it 40,000 merchant customers in New Zealand, or about 40% of the market.

The EFTPOS brand will be kept and VeriFone's general manager of Australia and New Zealand, Anthony Chalhoub, says the purchase puts it in a good position in the Asia-Pacific region because the electronic payments market is expanding.

"The market's definitely changing and and we need to evolve as quickly as the market is. There's a greater demand from the customer to offer more," he says.

Mr Chalhoub says EFTPOS currently employs 109 staff in New Zealand.
