Canada created a total of 95,000 mostly jobs, full-time, last month, pushing the unemployment rate down to 7.1%.

AAP reports analysts had expected 18,000 new jobs in May after 12,500 jobs were created in April.

Statistics Canada said employment rose in construction, retail and wholesale trade, "other services" such as repair and maintenance of private households, and businesses, building and other support services.

The agency said almost all of the gains were in the private sector, after two months of job losses.

The US economy added 175,000 jobs in May.
