BHP Billiton has sold its stake in the $A45 billion Browse gas project in Western Australia.

The $A1.7 billion sale to PetroChina was finalised late on Friday.

The ABC reports Woodside announced in April it would shelve the project at James Price Point near Broome.

Woodside said the project would not have delivered the required commercial returns and that it is now considering floating LNG technology to develop gas resources in the Browse Basin.
