The New Zealand - United States Council is worried that the start of free trade talks between the United States and the European Union could derail the Trans-Pacific Partnership talks.

The Government hopes the TPP talks which involve 11 nations will give New Zealand exporters unfettered access to the US market.

The talks are scheduled to be completed toward the end of this year.

New Zealand - United States Council executive director Stephen Jacobi said says he's concerned the momentum of the TPP talks could falter, if US officials are distracted by doing a deal with Europe.

But he still believes the talks will be wrapped up soon.
