New mobile network launched in NZ

A third mobile network has been launched in New Zealand, with the operator claiming to chop calling costs by half.

2Degrees has unveiled a prepay service, with national calls at 44 cents per minute and 9c for text messages.

The company is not offering billed or postpay services yet. It says these will be offered in the months to come, but would not say when.

2Degrees chief executive Eric Hertz says the company will give Telecom and Vodafone a run for their money.

Vodafone and Telecom say they will not lower their prepay mobile rates.

Telecom says while 2 Degrees' calling rate appears competitive, the text messaging rate is not.

A Telecom spokespeson says much better deals can be found in Telecom's prepaid deals.

Vodafone says 2 Degrees' claim of being half the price is simplistic and does not take into account savings which can be gained through prepay plans.
