Registrations of new cars fell in August for the first time in four months.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says registrations declined 1% to 4417 in August, compared to the previous month. They are down 22% on the same month a year ago.

New car sales hit an 11 year low in February as the recession hit demand and households curbed their spending and borrowing.

Used car registrations, which are usually imported used cars, fell 5% to 5874 in August compared to the previous month, a decrease of 15% on last year.
