The government statistician says Singapore has just displaced Japan as the fourth largest foreign investor in New Zealand assets.

Statistics New Zealand says Singapore's total investment in New Zealand at the end of March was $7.8 billion.

Direct investment from South East Asia into New Zealand jumped nearly 60% to $4.4 billion in the 12 months ended March, with most of the increase coming from Singapore.

However, Australia remains the largest direct investor in New Zealand assets such as buildings and businesses, with stocks valued at $63.3 billion at the end of March.

The United States is the second biggest investor in New Zealand and Britain is the third.

On the flipside, New Zealand's total investment abroad, including both direct investment and investment in shares and bonds, was nearly $164 billion at the end of March.

More than 57% of that was in Australia, the United States and Britain.
