Honey producer sees profit in tougher standards

Comvita is expecting to reap the benefits from tighter manuka honey labelling laws, after concerns were raised in some overseas markets about false claims and labelling of the honey.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is working on new guidelines for manuka.

Comvita says sales in Britain were given a shot in the arm after the labelling furore broke, as customers turned to trusted sources.

The company's chief operating officer, Scott Coulter, says it would benefit in the longer term from legislation that tightens standards.

Mr Coulter says after months of negotiation Comvita has also managed to get Tescos, Boots and Costco to raise the prices of its products sold in their stores.

Overall, the company says it's on track to exceed last year's profit of $7.4 million.
