The Bank of New Zealand has appointed a new chief executive.

Anthony Healy will replace Andrew Thorburn who will now head up the bank's Australian parent, the National Australia Bank.

Mr Healy has been with the BNZ since 2009 when he led its business division BNZ Partners.

BNZ chairman John Waller says he's delighted the bank could appoint from within its executive team.

He says it reinforces the investment it has made in its leadership.
