Activity in the services sector has remained robust.

The BNZ-Business New Zealand Performance of Services Index edged down half a point to 57.1 in August compared with the previous month, driven by new orders.

A reading above 50 indicates the sector expanded.

The employment index has its strongest showing since the survey began in 2007, as did supplier deliveries.

Most sectors are still expanding, led by wholesale trade, and health and community services, which offset a contraction in retail trade.

Some 62 percent of respondents are positive about the service sector's prospects.
