Air New Zealand has been named Airline of the Year for 2010 by a leading aviation magazine.

Air Transport World says the national carrier's been selected for what it calls a superb commitment to safety and operational excellence.

The publication says there's been sterling financial performance and fiscal management during one of the most turbulent periods in aviation history.

Elsewhere, it highlights the use of the airline's cockpit technology at destinations where there is challenging weather and terrain.

It also notes Air New Zealand conducted the world's first sustainable biofuel flight.

Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism John Key has congratulated the carrier on its accolade.
