Wellington defies national retail sales drop

The Wellington economy is out-performing the rest of the country.

Statistics New Zealand's June quarter retail sales figures confirm a slump in the retail sector nationally but show the capital is bucking the trend.

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce says June retail sales were slightly up and guest nights had increased by 2000 compared with June 2007.

Chief executive Charles Finny says times are still tough.

But he says what tends to happen during a recession is the expenditure from the Government economically insulates the city.
