People are paying more for vegetables and meat, pushing up the overall cost of food.

The food price index rose 0.4 percent in May, compared to a drop of 0.3 percent in April.

On an annual basis, food prices were up 0.8 percent, compared to May last year.

Statistics New Zealand said last month's result was driven by seasonally higher prices for vegetables.
