Govt wants to redesign electricity industry bureaucracy

The Government says disentangling the bureaucracy that governs the electricity industry is crucial for fixing much of New Zealand's energy woes.

Minister of Energy Gerry Brownlee told an energy conference in Auckland on Tuesday that the Government will use an analysis put forward by Business New Zealand to redesign the way the electricity industry is regulated.

There have been complaints for years that the industry is plagued by bureacratic confusion, spiralling prices and under-investment.

The prospect of reform has been welcomed by the Electricity Commission.
