McGrathNicol has been appointed receiver of the New Zealand Topshop and Topman businesses, after the company decided it could not continue losing money.

Shops in Auckland and Wellington remain open.

In a statement released today, receivers Conor McElhinney and Kare Johnstone said gift cards issued by the retailer can still be used by customers while the stores keep trading.

The Auckland shop opened in mid-2015 and the Wellington shop in November last year with hundreds queuing down the street to get opening-day bargains.

The franchise is controlled by a British company of the same name.
