Fisher & Paykel Appliances reports a rise of 51% in its half-year profit, due to strong growth in sales of respiratory and acute care products.

The medical equipment maker made $NZ28.3 million in the six months to the end of September, compared to $NZ18.7 million in the same period last year.

The company derives about 60% of its revenue from the United States, where there have been suggestions the financial crisis is affecting people's willingness to visit the doctor.

But chief executive Michael Daniell says Fisher & Paykel Appliances has not yet felt the effects of the financial crisis.

He says the company expects to post a full-year profit of approximately $NZ60 million, if the exchange rate remains around US55 cents.
