Phone service regulations may be changed - minister

7:31 pm on 10 December 2008

Communications Minister Steven Joyce will consider changing regulations which guarantee phone and internet coverage in hard-to-reach areas.

Telecom and Vodafone want a review of the Telecommunications Service Obligations, which ensure about 60,000 people in more remote areas receive phone and internet services.

The companies say the agreement is outdated and should be overhauled, but say services will not be jeopardised.

Mr Joyce plans to meet industry and sector groups to discuss the issue and make a decision in the new year.
