Steady Christmas shopping period, say retailers

The Christmas trading period was "just okay", according to the Retailers Association.

The organisation says retailers are reporting the period from Christmas Eve until 31 December was about the same as last year in terms of sales volume and value.

Chief executive John Albertson said the value of sales may be up slightly, but inflation wipes out any small gains.

He said given the recession, it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
