Job losses in the United States mounted last week.

The number of workers filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose by 11.5% to 524,000 last week.

Some 470,000 jobs were lost the previous week.

About 2.6 million people lost their jobs in 2008 - the largest slump in employment since 1945 when the United States demobilized at the end of World War II.
