Wall St jumps on bank rescue optimism

Stocks in the United States rose on Wednesday, on optimism that the Obama administration was making progress on a plan to relieve banks of money-losing assets.

JPMorgan gained 10.4%. Bank of America climbed nearly 14% and Citigroup rose more than 18%.

The Dow Jones industrial average finished up 200.72 points, or 2.46%, at 8,375.45. Standard & Poor's 500 Index climbed 28.38 points, or 3.36 %, to 874.09.

The Nasdaq Composite Index ended up 53.44 points, or 3.55%, at 1,558.34.

It was the fourth consecutive day of gains on the S&P 500.

Volume was active on the New York Stock Exchange, where about 1.55 billion shares changed hands. About 2.17 billion shares were traded on the Nasdaq.
