State-owned power company Meridian Energy is shrugging off the recession, and forging ahead with its billion dollar development plans.

The energy generator and retailer is gearing up for a series of major new construction projects.

Meridian chief executive Tim Lusk said the company will have its windfarm project on Wellington's west coast operating by mid-April.

He said Meridian has gained planning consent for the 64-megawatt Te Uku windfarm project near Raglan.

Mr Lusk said the company is also working on four other large windfarm or hydro projects, for which it is seeking resource consent.
