The New Zealand sharemarket was lower at the close of trade on Thursday, down 4 points to 2658 on turnover of $67 million.
Top stocks were mixed. Telecom rose 9 cents to $2.63, but Contact Energy was down 10c to $5.60 and Fletcher Building fell 13c to $6.14.
The Australian share market shrugged off weak offshore leads and closed about 2% higher.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 finished up 74.8 points, or 2.04% to 3,743, while the broader All Ordinaries advanced 68.6 points, or 1.89%, to 3,695.8.
Japanese stocks were also higher. The Nikkei-225 index rose 119.71 points, or 1.37%, to 8,847.01. The broader Topix index of all first section shares gained 9.54 points, or 1.15%, to 839.50.
Hong Kong share prices were up 2.26% higher, supported by a rebound on the Shanghai bourse, dealers said. The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended up 336.01 points at 15,214.46.
