Hybrid bus company looking further afield

A bus maker in Christchurch-based is looking to increase its exports to Australia and further afield.

DesignLine already exports 30% of its vehicles to Australia, where its hybrid electric battery and fuel bus is proving popular. It says its focus is on "clean and green".

Managing director Andrew Green says the company has experienced an increase in demand for its products amid the recession, as fuel prices steer people towards public transport and transport operators look for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Revenue increased 40% over the past year and the company expects a similar increase for the current trading year as export orders come in.

Field staff are already doing promotional work in Australia and the company is looking to the United States, Europe and the Middle East next.

Mr Green says DesignLine is looking to produce 350 - 400 units per year in the next five years.
