The New Zealand market fell 24 points, 0.88%, to close at 2776 on turnover of $84 million on Thursday.
Contact Energy lost 10 cents to $5.85 but Trustpower gained 5c to $7.80 after the release of the Commerce Commission's critical report of the electricity market.
Telecom slipped 4c to close at $2.58, while Fletcher Building lost 6c to $6.55.
Auckland Airport fell 6c to $1.61 after announcing its retail operations would not make as much money this year as some analysts were predicting.
The Australian share market lost ground. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 was down 10.7 points, or 0.28%, at 3,813.9, while the broader All Ordinaries had lost 4.2 points, or 0.11%, to 3,804.7.
Japanese share prices closed down 0.86%. The benchmark Nikkei-225 index fell 80.49 points to end at 9,264.15. The broader Topix index of all first section shares declined 4.86 points, or 0.55%, to 881.44.
