Stocks in the United States rebounded in late trade on Wednesday.
Stocks were sharply lower for most of the day as crude and copper prices fell.
Investors are worried that an economic recovery will be slower than thought.
But shares in the healthcare and consumer staples sectors rose late in the session. Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co were both up around 1.5%.
The Dow Jones industrial average gained 14.81 points, or 0.18%, to 8,178.41.
Standard & Poor's 500 Index dropped 1.47 points, or 0.17%, to 879.56. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 1.00 points, or 0.06%, to 1,747.17.
