Head of 2degrees steps down

There are changes in both the leadership and ownership of mobile phone firm 2degrees, as the company prepares to go live next month and offer an alternative mobile phone service to Vodafone and Telecom.

Chief executive Mike Reynolds will step down next month after a year in the job, to be replaced by Eric Hertz, who recently headed the Seattle mobile phone company Zumobi.

In his short time at the company, Mike Reynolds helped ready it for launching while also criticising its dominant rivals for short changing users, and urging the regulator to do more to ensure greater competition.

In a second major change, United States-based Trilogy International Partners has become the majority owner of the telecommunications company. Trilogy has bought a 26% stake of General Enterprise Management Services, giving it 52% of 2degrees.

It will pay General Enterprise Management Services in stock, giving the Hong-Kong based company an 8% holding in the wireless investment company.

Trilogy says the increased stake reflects its belief that 2degrees can succeed in taking market share from Vodafone and Telecom.
