Sharemarket closes up 37 points

The NZX 50 index finished up 37 points, or 1.2%, to close at 2998 on turnover of $71 million on Monday.

Telecom finished the day up 6 cents to $2.86, Fletcher Building was up 2c to $7.29 and Contact Energy was up 5c to $6.19.

Auckland International Airport was up 2c to $1.74, Air New Zealand was down 1c to 98c, Fisher & Paykel Appliances was up 3c to 86c and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare was up 9c to $3.19.

Sky City Entertainment Group was up 3c to $3.13 and Sanford was up 5c to $5.25 after buying a parcel of mussel farms for nearly $24 million.

The Warehouse closed up 4c to $3.89, while NZ Refinery was up 15c to $7.65 on speculation the United States' leading oil refiner, Valero, may want to buy the country's sole oil refinery.

The dollar was buying 65.62 US cents, 80.01 Australian cents, 39.88 pence, 62.19 yen and 0.4608 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was 61.33.

Across the Tasman, the Australian 200 index is up 61 points, or 1.5%, to 4151 by late Monday afternoon.
