Record sales reported by Ikea

Swedish furniture group Ikea reports record sales of €21.5 billion ($US30 billion), despite slowing growth.

Ikea said sales for the year to 31 August rose by 1.4%, down from 7% growth in the previous year.

It earlier cut 5000 jobs to cope with the drop in demand due to the financial crisis.

The company said it has opened 15 new stores internationally since last September.

New chief executive Mikael Ohlsson said Ikea knows that many customers have less money to spend and its low-price concept is therefore "more relevant than ever".

Ikea is family owned and not listed on the stock exchange. It employs more than 120,000 people and has 267 stores in 25 countries, along with another 34 under franchise agreements.
