Plans to enlarge a suburban shopping mall in Johnsonville have been approved by Wellington City Council.
Resource consent was granted on Monday to expand the mall, despite a report that estimates nearly $50 million in retail spending would be lost from the Wellington central business district.
Councillor Andy Foster says the mall will be made three or four times larger and contain almost 100 extra shops.
He says it is estimated the loss of spending in central Wellington will be recovered in two to three years.
